Governor Tim Walz Proclaims November 2 as Cheerleading Day in Minnesota

Nov 2, 2025

COON RAPIDS, MN — November 2, 2025 — Governor Tim Walz officially proclaimed November 2, 2025, as Cheerleading Day in Minnesota, honoring the athletes, coaches, and programs that represent the sport across the state. November 2 marks the birthday of cheerleading, a sport that originated in Minnesota in 1898 at the University of Minnesota. The proclamation highlights the state’s rich cheer history and the continued dedication of cheerleaders and coaches who build spirit, teamwork, and leadership across communities. “Cheerleading has deep roots in Minnesota, and this proclamation is a meaningful acknowledgment of the athletes and coaches who continue to carry that legacy forward,” said Krista Wigen and Lauryn Barron, directors of the Midwest College Cheer Combine. “We’re thrilled to see cheer recognized for the incredible dedication and community it represents here in Minnesota – and we’d love to share that there’s more in motion to support cheerleaders across the Midwest, including some exciting initiatives under the merging Midwest Cheer Association.” This initiative was spearheaded by the team behind the Midwest College Cheer Combine, who were proud to help bring this recognition forward. The Combine provides opportunities for college-bound athletes to meet and show their skills in front of colleges from across the Midwest. The Combine is part of a broader effort to grow and strengthen cheerleading across Minnesota and the Midwest through new programs and partnerships under the emerging Midwest Cheer Association.
